DIED IN THE LINE OF DUTY FROM GUNSHOT
End of Watch: September 11, 1927
Appointed: March 15, 1905

Officer James Lambert, from 1013 Brown Street of the 10th and Buttonwood station he was shot and killed by Frank Donnelly also known as “Dago Frank”.  Investigation by police officials at City Hall disclosed this fact and also that Lambert and Bernard Montague another policeman, also wounded by Donnelly were two blocks from their regular beats when shot.

Assistant Director Tempest declared today his investigation of the shooting showed that both men went to Donnelly’s home at 406 N. 6th street at the suggestion of Lambert.  Several weeks ago, the policeman sold Donnelly some jewelry and $5 still was due on the purchase.  The effort to obtain this money led to the shooting Tempest declared.  They had an argument and exchanged blows with their fists when the perpetrator pulled a revolver.  In the scuffle to make an arrest, Officer Lambert was shot in the head and died.  Donnelly was held without bail for the Coroner when arraigned today before Magistrate Renshaw in Central Police Court.
