DIED IN THE LINE OF DUTY FROM GUNSHOTS

Officer William Davis a policeman of the 22nd Street and Hunting Park Avenue station died in the Samaritan Hospital today from a bullet wound inflicted early yesterday.

Officer Davis and Officer Goranly of the 39th district attempted to arrest two negro males, Arthur Sahe and James Harvey on the highway at Ridge and Allegheny avenue. The officers followed the men to 31st street and Allegheny Avenue and asked them their business in the neighborhood at which time one of them stepped back and shot Officer Davis in the stomach causing his death. Both suspects escaped but were apprehended later.

Officer Davis was twenty-nine years old and lived at 2921 N. Hope Street. He leaves a widow and two children to survive him. Davis served with the 28th Division of the U.S. Army in the war and went through battles without a scratch this battle he lost.
